African Innovation: Disrupting From Within
Limited Capacity filling up

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

The innovation narrative in Africa has moved from innovating out of necessity to finding African-solutions-to-African-problems to innovation from Africa to the world. How do we ensure that innovative start-ups in Africa meet the needs of Africans? When it comes to disruption in Africa, one size fits none. Models can’t necessarily be lifted directly from Europe or America and implemented in Africa. They can't even be lifted from one African country and replicated in another. In line with this year's SMW theme 'Closer', African Innovation: Disrupting From Within is a panel session aimed at providing in-depth look at how African innovation develops in context and consideration of our local dynamics. We will explore the mindsets, partnerships, models and interests that underpin this idea .

Banking the Unbanked: Lessons from Informal Financial Services
Limited Capacity seats available

Many people continue to use informal financial services even as they increase use of formal services. What lessons do robust forms of informal services have for formal service providers?

According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, about 46.3% of the Nigerian adult population are excluded from financial services. This could be due to several reasons including low trust level, poor understanding of the banking system, low financial literacy level, poor financial power, inflexible bank policies, low financial technology penetration level, and a lack of tailored services to meet the needs of financially excluded adults. Due to the foregoing, financial services in developing countries like Nigeria are missing out on a big chunk of money in the economy. It is, therefore, expedient that financial services start thinking about methods, technology, and strategies for financial inclusion.

The global pursuit of financial inclusion as a vehicle for economic development had a positive effect in Nigeria as the exclusion rate reduced from 53.0 % in 2008 to 46.3 % in 2010. In 2012, the Central Bank of Nigeria launched the National Financial Inclusion Strategy with a target of reducing the exclusion rate to 20% by 2020. At the same time, adult population with access to payment services would increase to 70%.
Financial inclusion aims to grant individuals, households and businesses, irrespective of income level, access to appropriate and affordable financial services products. Financial inclusion is a key enabler to reducing poverty and boosting prosperity. Financial education is crucial to the future and stability of the financial system, to increase financial inclusion.

For this panel discussion; key questions to be discussed are:
  1. How can more opportunities be created for people to save and borrow in developing economies How can financial service providers increase the number of people using the bank?
  2. Can banks provide financial services to people with low literacy level?
  3. How can financial service providers customise their products to overcome challenges faced in banking the previously unbanked adult population in Nigeria?
  4. What expertise and innovation can Microfinance banks, commercial banks, FinTech industries, and policy makers offer to reach the over 50 million unbanked Nigerians.
  5. How do we measure success in financial inclusion?

Bringing Lagos 'Closer' Through Social Media Inspired Community Journalism
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Bringing Lagos 'Closer' Through Social Media Inspired Community Journalism presents an excellent opportunity to highlight the role of community journalism in fostering community cohesion, and improvements in overall governance, especially against the backdrop of the growth and capabilities of social and digital media in Nigeria.

Over the years, there has been a steady decline in community journalism with relatively little or no investment in the sector. Yet, today’s mainstream journalism can be traced to the launch of community newspapers, especially, the first newspaper to be published in Nigeria in 1859 titled ‘Iwe Iroyin Fun Awon Ara Egba Ati Yoruba’.

Interestingly, we are witnessing a reversal. We are now seeing individuals, groups and organisations showing keen interest in community journalism, and the sector is re-emerging. This has been further boosted by the Lagos State Government’s declaration of support for community media to provide access to information, resources persons and advertising. In recent years community journalism has made an impact by attracting government attention to important community issues.  The goal of this session is to create community connections with the tech ecosystem to better collaborate, educate, inform, and opens the minds of people to the power of media to create change.

Harassment In The Information Age - Rising Above Cyber Bullying
Limited Capacity seats available

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Cyber bullying continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing social media users.  Research from anti-bullying charity, Ditch the Label suggests that social media is making youngsters more anxious, with a lot of them depending on likes on their posts to build their self confidence and the number of followers linked to their self worth. Not only is social media redefining the climate of bullying, it is having clear impacts upon the identity, behavior and personality of its users.

Instagram has been highlighted as having become the vehicle most used for harmful comments with less figures for Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat. This has led to Instagram developing a machine learning technology to block offensive comments, also giving people the option of disabling comments altogether or making their own list of banned words or emojis.

This panel will explore how social media and online reputation can impact individuals now and into the future as well as what we can do as a community to rise above cyber bullying.

The Power Of Storytelling In Driving Social Change
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

How can digital platforms be used to tell stories, change behaviour, and drive impact?
There is no denying that storytelling serves as a powerful tool for not only inspiring action and creating social change but also in influencing thought leaders, funders, and decision makers. Whatever the cause we promote, we need to tell new narratives that will bring people closer to our messages by connecting with their deepest motivations and promoting more radical action among individuals and communities. Stories engage people at every level - not just in their minds but in their emotions, values and imaginations, which are the drivers of real change.

So you have a “big idea” that’s game-changing. That’s great! Now what?
Whether you’re selling a product, launching an app, or trying to improve lives and drive social change, you need to know how to get people to buy into your big idea. We will discuss how to use digital platforms and storytelling to build a community around your idea, advocate for social change, and drive individuals’ behaviour to maximize your impact and reach your goals. This session will also include discussions on how you can use individual experiences to create a “village” of collaborators and partners to help you champion your cause, be more innovative, have a larger impact, connect communities and bring your ideas closer to each individual.

The Individual African Traveler As A Value Creator In The Community
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

“We travel because distance & difference are the secret tonic of creativity; when we get home, home is still the same but something inside our minds has changed, and that changes everything.” - John Lehrer

In recent years, there has been intense focus on Africa as the new tourist hub. Through social media the world is able to see Africa’s rich heritage & beautiful landscape. However, the conversations omit one key group in the value chain, the African Traveler. Misconceptions have been perpetuated about the African traveler primarily due to the negative portrayal of Africans in the media. Misconceptions include overstaying, illegal immigration, among others - which have typically lead to tighter border controls and increased visa restrictions for Africans.

Can travel be a tool to change the socio-economic landscape of Africa?  Africans travelers have the potential to add significant value to the global economy and can help broker a shift in conversations on travel barriers. This panel will explore how exposing our citizens to other cultures via immersive travel can foster individual & economic development while encouraging Africans to become real-life ambassadors of our heritage.

Driving Travel Decisions And Building Symbiotic Communities
Limited Capacity seats available

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

The power of SoMo - Social Media and Mobile Technology- in driving travel decisions is an evolving conversation that digs deep at the heart of stakeholders in Nigeria's travel and tourism industry. In today's world, it is becoming increasingly obvious that the key to growth is in building communities; and this can be accelerated by engaging the symbiotic relationship between social and mobile. Indeed, a strategic convergence between these two bed fellows is instrumental in creating and curating unique experiences for enthusiasts, patrons and investors.

So what really does this mean for travel business owners? How can tour operators and travel agents plug into this reality to scale their businesses to the next level? Paid In Full: Fixing Music Rights for Artists
Limited Capacity seats available

Music is tough for songwriters and artists now that consumption has shifted from buying albums to streaming playlists. A tangled web of rights-holders and opaque processes make distributing the correct royalties to deserving parties hard. In our world today, a single song stream triggers payments to writers, performers, publishers, labels and others across multiple services and this eventually translates to billions of micro-transactions every day. While music rights are a mess, the good news is; people are looking to fix them and that is basically what this panel is targeted at.

Show Me The Money: Making Subscription Revenue Models Work For African Media
Limited Capacity seats available

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Media companies around the world have seen paid subscriptions surge - can this revenue model be replicated successfully in the African context? The theme of SMW Lagos 2017 is “Closer,” which is fitting, because one of the most interesting things happening in media today is the growth of paid memberships in media communities.

Whether it’s the venerable New York Times, or new disruptors like The Information, more media companies are learning how to turn drive-by viewers - who consume content for free - into loyal audiences who make recurring payments in return for access. Not only do these companies secure predictable revenue every month, subscriptions deepen the relationship between publisher and community member.

Can this model work in our African context? Would African audiences pay a subscription for content? The answer is a resounding yes, and 5 companies at the forefront of experimenting with subscription payments will show us how.

The Artist as a Brand… Defining Your Value
Limited Capacity seats available

There has been a growing concern as regards the role of social media in harnessing the brand value of the Nigerian artiste. Does social media actually harness the brand value of these artists or does it cheapen their brand value? It is a known fact that social media has its perks but then in it lies the peeves of over exposure and accessibility. Thus the reason for this panel; to look into social media involvement in terms of an artiste’s brand value. In this regard is Social media a blessing or a curse?

Harnessing The Power of Influencers For Brand Growth
Limited Capacity filling up

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

If influencer marketing is not part of your brand marketing strategy in 2018, it’s time to consider it. Social media Influencers have changed the way consumers discover and interact with brands. Research shows that 83% of consumers trust influencers more than they do billboards or traditional celebrity endorsements. Contrary to popular belief the power of social media influencers is not limited to the number of followers amassed but the ability to engage, curate/create and most importantly drive actions.

Influencer marketing is still a third or fourth consideration for many Nigerian brands. Attention is currency and this session will show brands how to get ahead of the curve and learn the next trends in influencer marketing.

During this masterclass OMG Hypebuzz will share their experience working with top tier influencers, brands and agencies and give deeper insights of how to successfully harness the power of social media influencers for brand growth.

You will learn:
  •  How to select the right influencers for your brand campaign.
  • Platform Effectiveness - One of the most important elements in harnessing influencers for brand growth, is using influencers and the platforms they exist on in the right way.
  • Driving Conversions - Influencers can help you drive tangible actions but far too often the concern is only with numbers of views, likes, reposts and retweets (Vanity metrics). We’ll show you what you should really be looking for to judge if your campaign has been a success and how to calculate the true ROI.

Although they have frequently been labeled as materialistic, spoiled and saddled with a sense of entitlement, many millennials feel that they will not be able to achieve material goals like finding their dream job, buying a house or face retiring until much later in their lives than their parents did. And the truth is, many millennials just weren't taught about money!

For many young people there is an innate distrust of the current banking landscape. Millenials are entering an economic system where all we see is a huge financial crisis with huge financial implications. Finance is built on trust, and if we do not have that trust in the system, it is a disadvantage for us — and the system, too. When millennials believe the larger world of finance is broken, it’s hard to make the argument that we should invest time and energy in our personal finances. We avoid the subject because there’s a certain inevitability around it; a feeling that larger forces at work will ruin our chances of financial security. So why even try?

Only 24 percent of Millennials have demonstrated a basic understanding of how to manage their money, women more than men. Many have no clue how to or when to start saving. Only a select percentage know how to invest their income. Only a few know how to properly save for responsibilities.

Why are millennials wary of tackling personal finance? Why is the struggle so real? How can millennials become better financially educated, better savers and smarter spenders, wary borrowers? How can we help millennials achieve financial stability?

Around 87 percent of millennials all over the world use online banking apps or websites to move money from one account to another, and check their balances. This mix of technology and finance has vast implications for the future of personal finance. This panel will show young people how we can marry tech with financial literacy, and build financial systems worth trusting.

Leveraging Technology For Young People's Sexual And Reproductive Health And Rights
Limited Capacity seats available

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Many young people, especially women and girls lack adequate information and access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and rights services. In Nigeria, little priority is placed on providing SRH services for young people  even though global policies and studies have shown the dire consequences of a lack of access to these services. The societal stigma attached to victims of sexual violence and assault as well as young unmarried girls and women seeking information and accessing contraceptives also proves a major barrier to access. Many young people also do not know where to get help and information regarding SRH and rights.

Leveraging Technology For Young People's Sexual And Reproductive Health And Rights is a panel discussion aimed at exploring the challenges young people face in accessing information on safe sex, contraception, menstrual hygiene and puberty as well as reporting sexual violence. It will also feature a discussion on HACEY solutions: the SALVUS and TOMBEY platforms which makes use of mobile technology to improve access to services and information on SRH and sexual violence.

Salvus, meaning "Safe" is an online platform that enables survivors and witnesses of sexual violence report incidents anonymously and securely, and access help from registered support service providers. The TOMBEY platform helps young people locate youth-friendly SRH centres near them, identify services available at these centres, and provide the opportunity for them to access needed services.

The panel session will focus on:
1. Identifying challenges young people face in accessing SRH
2. Current SRH policies and policy gaps
3. Youth mainstreaming in policies addressing SRH for young people
4. Gathering and using Data for SRH planning and policy
5. Helping young people tell their stories and share experiences on accessing SRH services.

Improving Service Delivery In Rural Communities Through Technology
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Can technology intersect civic engagement and institutional reform to enhance service delivery? Like every other country, Nigerian government and agencies have public data and information that can help citizens make informed decisions. Today's citizens should know how government revenues are expended in the delivery of public infrastructure and funding of the budget.

Technology is a broad sphere, which is key to good governance. It is imperative that  citizens exploit innovation to establish transparent and accountable systems in our society. Budeshi and Tracka are digital tools designed to enhance transparency and accountable government in Nigeria.

This panel session will highlight how Budeshi.ng and Tracka have been used in enhanced implementation, tracking and red flagging of contractors and projects in over 20 states and 1,200 projects.

About Budeshi.ng Budeshi “open it” in the Hausa language) is an initiative of Public and Private Development Centre that aims to make government contracting information more transparent. It is doing this by linking budget and procurement data to the provision of public services and structuring the data, using the Open Contracting Data Standard, so that it can be visualized, searched, compared, and used. Budeshi’s work responds to the need for open, coherent, and usable data to enable better tracking and monitoring of public finance projects.

About Tracka.ng Tracka was established by BudgIT to address critical issues surrounding social and economic development in Nigeria, precisely the lack of citizens inclusion in developmental projects, an ever-increasing number of abandoned projects and poor execution of the few projects implemented. Over the years, Nigerians in rural communities have little or no ideas about government projects in their communities, Tracka then enables citizens to collaborate, track and give feedback on public projects in their community. Tracka uses both online and offline engagement channels to keep residents informed about government projects.

Developing countries around the world experience a gender divide in which an average of 25% fewer women than men have access to the internet, and this percentage surpasses 40% in sub-Saharan Africa (Women in the Web, Intel Corporation). In addition to this, the African continent has the lowest proportion of individuals using the internet in terms of total population and people aged 15-24, only 21.8% and 40.3% respectively (ICT Facts and Figures 2017, Intl. Telecommunication Union) . The Mandela Washington Fellowship and YALI are working to change this.

Come learn about the deeper causes of the Gender Digital Divide, complex ways it limits Africa’s economic and human potential and and what you can do to help. This session is powered by the passion and success of Mandela Fellows from across the continent and was coordinated by the Mandela Washington Fellows Alumni Association (Nigeria Chapter) and IREX.

Design, Perception & Identity
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Founded in 2011 by Rukky Ladoja and Obida Obioha, Grey’s thematic collections revolve around the concept of simultaneously globalising and localising African culture using contemporary fashion as a medium.  Taking ideas or stories rooted in the traditions of Ladoja’s culture and making them globally relatable.

Our priority is to explore ways to make culturally inspired fashion approachable while providing feminine style options for women who are looking to incorporate beautiful fragments of African society directly into their cosmopolitan wardrobe. Previous seasons have seen collections based on basket weaving and traditional royal accessories local to western African cultures and identities; breaking the norms and ideas behind these traditions into bold woven and screen prints while keeping the shapes contemporary and functional.

Over the years, as well as presenting at the prestigious Lagos fashion and design week annually, Grey has had successful presentations at the international fashion showcase at London fashion week. It has also focused its marketing and sales strategies towards trade shows such as the WWD Women’s Magic trade show in Las Vegas. Rukky Ladoja has won local awards for her contemporary designs and for being a pioneer in the Nigerian ready to wear fashion industry including the British council Young creative entrepreneuraward in 2013.

In this panel session we explore how design helps to construct and inform our identity and perception, including the following:
  • Using clothing as communication:communicating gender, social identity and consumer culture.
  • Are you what you wear? Dissecting the identity of the fashion label vis a vis the identity of the label’s target customer.
  • The evolution of a brand’s aesthetic, including the impact of appealing to an international market on your brand’s aesthetic and design.
  • How creative elements in the visual identities of brands affects consumer perception (luxury v high street /affordable)

Storytelling Through Film - A Panacea
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Movies and all forms of visual storytelling, have always been more than just a tool for entertainment. Over the years, film has been used as a tool for social re-engineering, promoting themes which form the notions and opinions of viewers. Film often forms the first impressions people have for other societies and cultures and  when utilized skillfully, has proven to be a huge tool in social development.

The current state of our nation and society, is heartbreaking. There is a crisis of fitting the identities of the individual (ethnicities) within the constructs of the community (nation). Internally, there are so many lines that divide. This is evident oftentimes in the manner in which harmless conversations on social media rapidly degenerate into a hate filled back and forth, which often play along the prejudiced lines of tribe, religion and societal status.

Nollywood has a huge role to play by emphasizing storytelling as a tool for nation building. Telling the right stories and promoting positive themes, can provoke necessary discussions among individuals, in homes, offices and streets. Passing the right information will go a long way in correcting wrongly held views and notions, while promoting a society that is more accommodating, and tolerant to the individual as well as the society as a whole.

The Digital Takeover: How Millennials Are Changing The Financial Landscape
Limited Capacity seats available

Every generation leaves its mark on the world, and every generation is influenced by the world they are nurtured in. Infact, with each passing generation comes a new set of values and expectations.

Today, we are so caught up on the millennial discussion. What trends are they driving? What are their interests? Why do they do the things they? Finally, how can industries adapt to continue to appeal to their newest target audience?

Growing up with an anytime, anywhere outlook to accessing a proliferation of online content and social media, millennials expect the same convenience and ease from their service providers - regardless of the industry. The financial services sector is no exception.

As millennials’ purchasing power continues to increase, this ‘always-on’ generation is continuously transforming banking by demanding and creating upgraded digital services that meet and exceed their own increasingly high service delivery expectations.

Their interest in solutions that simplify daily tasks such as bill payments, bank transfers, withdrawals and deposits, is already inspiring traditional financial institutions to push the industry envelope, thinking outside the box to offer banking solutions that keep pace with their online-only competitors.

2018 Social Media Week Lagos (#SMWLagos) provides us with a veritable platform to deepen discussions on this subject matter. Fidelity Bank, on the other hand is organizing a focused session on ‘The Millennial Takeover: How Millennials Are Changing The Financial Landscape”. Don’t be left out of the conversation, join us!
