Bringing Lagos 'Closer' Through Social Media Inspired Community Journalism presents an excellent opportunity to highlight the role of community journalism in fostering community cohesion, and improvements in overall governance, especially against the backdrop of the growth and capabilities of social and digital media in Nigeria.

Over the years, there has been a steady decline in community journalism with relatively little or no investment in the sector. Yet, today’s mainstream journalism can be traced to the launch of community newspapers, especially, the first newspaper to be published in Nigeria in 1859 titled ‘Iwe Iroyin Fun Awon Ara Egba Ati Yoruba’.

Interestingly, we are witnessing a reversal. We are now seeing individuals, groups and organisations showing keen interest in community journalism, and the sector is re-emerging. This has been further boosted by the Lagos State Government’s declaration of support for community media to provide access to information, resources persons and advertising. In recent years community journalism has made an impact by attracting government attention to important community issues.  The goal of this session is to create community connections with the tech ecosystem to better collaborate, educate, inform, and opens the minds of people to the power of media to create change.

Not only is social media redefining the climate of bullying, it is having clear impacts upon the identity, behavior and personality of its users. 

Instagram has been highlighted as having become the vehicle most used for harmful comments with less figures for Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat. This has led to Instagram developing a machine learning technology to block offensive comments, also giving people the option of disabling comments altogether or making their own list of banned words or emojis.

It is difficult for young people in Africa to get reliable and high-quality information about sex, love and relationships, and our aim is to provide this information in an open, honest, non-judgmental way. It’s actually a fundamental human right to have sexual pleasure and have safe, satisfying and happy relationships.  So if we know people are looking for this info offline and online, why aren’t we providing them with the info they’re looking for? We believe this is possible, with the right strategy.

Love Matters  uses “pleasure” as a hook to engage our online communities to talk about sexuality and gender rights and to help them making better choices in their lives. Our online approach means young people can access reliable information via their mobile phones or personal computers. Their anonymity is guaranteed and they can look into topics without being judged.

We at Love Matters put this information online because we want 3 things:
  • We are able to bypass traditional gatekeepers who could censor this information.
  • With the growing explosion of Internet access specifically mobile Internet, we can reach even more young people than ever before.
  • Because young people want to know about sex. and besides the bad things, they want to know about the GOOD things. The do’s and don’ts. how to have orgasms! Also they want to read stories of people who know how to have them!

Blush-Free Conversations On Love, Sex, And Relationships In The Digital World will highlight factual stuff – like all about women’s and men’s bodies, birth control, and sexually transmitted infections. But we also have the pleasure and emotional side – like how to make love and how to have safe and satisfying relationships. This session share ideas of using social media to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in a fun way especially for our young audience.
