Bringing Lagos 'Closer' Through Social Media Inspired Community Journalism
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Bringing Lagos 'Closer' Through Social Media Inspired Community Journalism presents an excellent opportunity to highlight the role of community journalism in fostering community cohesion, and improvements in overall governance, especially against the backdrop of the growth and capabilities of social and digital media in Nigeria.

Over the years, there has been a steady decline in community journalism with relatively little or no investment in the sector. Yet, today’s mainstream journalism can be traced to the launch of community newspapers, especially, the first newspaper to be published in Nigeria in 1859 titled ‘Iwe Iroyin Fun Awon Ara Egba Ati Yoruba’.

Interestingly, we are witnessing a reversal. We are now seeing individuals, groups and organisations showing keen interest in community journalism, and the sector is re-emerging. This has been further boosted by the Lagos State Government’s declaration of support for community media to provide access to information, resources persons and advertising. In recent years community journalism has made an impact by attracting government attention to important community issues.  The goal of this session is to create community connections with the tech ecosystem to better collaborate, educate, inform, and opens the minds of people to the power of media to create change.

About Us
Morebranches was birthed from the discovery of a New Age in Africa; the splash of creativity and curiosity of the African millennial across Music, Technology, Arts, Business, Politics, Science, Education, Healthcare, Visual industry, Fashion, Urban regeneration and other spheres. We aim to properly document the growth of a new culture that is being built by the youth for the growth and sustainability of future generations in the African continent. Harassment In The Information Age - Rising Above Cyber Bullying
Limited Capacity seats available

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Cyber bullying continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing social media users.  Research from anti-bullying charity, Ditch the Label suggests that social media is making youngsters more anxious, with a lot of them depending on likes on their posts to build their self confidence and the number of followers linked to their self worth. Not only is social media redefining the climate of bullying, it is having clear impacts upon the identity, behavior and personality of its users.

Instagram has been highlighted as having become the vehicle most used for harmful comments with less figures for Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat. This has led to Instagram developing a machine learning technology to block offensive comments, also giving people the option of disabling comments altogether or making their own list of banned words or emojis.

This panel will explore how social media and online reputation can impact individuals now and into the future as well as what we can do as a community to rise above cyber bullying.

Show Me The Money: Making Subscription Revenue Models Work For African Media
Limited Capacity seats available

You need a:  Campus Badge to attend this event.

Media companies around the world have seen paid subscriptions surge - can this revenue model be replicated successfully in the African context? The theme of SMW Lagos 2017 is “Closer,” which is fitting, because one of the most interesting things happening in media today is the growth of paid memberships in media communities.

Whether it’s the venerable New York Times, or new disruptors like The Information, more media companies are learning how to turn drive-by viewers - who consume content for free - into loyal audiences who make recurring payments in return for access. Not only do these companies secure predictable revenue every month, subscriptions deepen the relationship between publisher and community member.

Can this model work in our African context? Would African audiences pay a subscription for content? The answer is a resounding yes, and 5 companies at the forefront of experimenting with subscription payments will show us how.

Creatives Connect: Building Tribes & Impact Through Digital Influence
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Community building in the digital space is changing the way we do business and create impact. Beyond content, there is a need to deepen relationships by creating conversations, building community and collectively supporting individual perspectives, while helping each other to thrive.
Digital influence built on community and impact, has proven to birth forth stronger success. In addition, brands who work with digital influencers are more convinced through engagement and the impact (conversions) that such partnerships create. They see more ROI when a trusted tribe has been built by the influencers they work with. It’s no wonder, Mark Zuckerberg updated the mission of Facebook to focus on building communities when he said– “Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.”
Social media has given creatives, leaders and gamechangers the opportunity to express themselves, build a following, and also earn through their passions. This has aided more people to leverage on the power of the online space.
However, there is a huge gap amongst entrepreneurs and professionals in the creative and online space as regards building real impact, transforming lives, creating stronger communities and thriving in the process. How can we use social media to educate other aspiring leaders, creatives and entrepreneurs using community learning, which helps us build better networks and partnerships? How can technology aid a young fashion creative to connect and promote local manufacturing in the Nigeria fashion industry? How can we use technology to build communities we can trust through real time conversations?
The rise of creatives, online entrepreneurs and other professionals in this digital age, is truly a blessing. However, we can create greater impact that benefits the influencers, brands and the communities they serve.
This Meetup will create more awareness and possibilities available through community building, and enlighten attendees on the various opportunities available to build products and services that will add more value to their communities. Furthermore, attendees will network with like minds, learn from experts, and leave with ideas to help them thrive better in their businesses.

 Attendees will Learn:
•More about the importance of building solid communities through content
•How to Create a Vibrant Web Based Community
    • Becoming a digital Influencer by building an online community through impact
    • Utilizing Social Media For Developmental Relationships
    • Transiting From Digital To Physical ( Building Physical Interactions from Digital Connections )
    • Case Study: Ideas on how to build products and services that will benefit your tribe/community (and create more trust)
•From experts that have built thriving communities
    • Oppourtunity to meet industry experts
    • Network with fellow creatives, entrepreneurs and start ups

Who should attend tis session?

It is difficult for young people in Africa to get reliable and high-quality information about sex, love and relationships, and our aim is to provide this information in an open, honest, non-judgmental way. It’s actually a fundamental human right to have sexual pleasure and have safe, satisfying and happy relationships.  So if we know people are looking for this info offline and online, why aren’t we providing them with the info they’re looking for? We believe this is possible, with the right strategy.

Love Matters  uses “pleasure” as a hook to engage our online communities to talk about sexuality and gender rights and to help them making better choices in their lives. Our online approach means young people can access reliable information via their mobile phones or personal computers. Their anonymity is guaranteed and they can look into topics without being judged.

We at Love Matters put this information online because we want 3 things:
  • We are able to bypass traditional gatekeepers who could censor this information.
  • With the growing explosion of Internet access specifically mobile Internet, we can reach even more young people than ever before.
  • Because young people want to know about sex. and besides the bad things, they want to know about the GOOD things. The do’s and don’ts. how to have orgasms! Also they want to read stories of people who know how to have them!

Blush-Free Conversations On Love, Sex, And Relationships In The Digital World will highlight factual stuff – like all about women’s and men’s bodies, birth control, and sexually transmitted infections. But we also have the pleasure and emotional side – like how to make love and how to have safe and satisfying relationships. This session share ideas of using social media to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in a fun way especially for our young audience.
