The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) DIY Fundraising: All You Need To Know About Online Fundraising  masterclass teaches nonprofits, civil society actors, activists (and anyone with a cause) to fundraise through building a community of online and offline supporters. We will review technology that helps to build and strengthen online communities of current and potential donors and supporters.

According to Blackbaud’s 2015 Charitable Giving Report, in the United States:
• Online giving has been steadily growing over the last couple of years, up 9.2% from 2014 to 2015.
• Small organizations continued to see the largest growth in online giving.

While this data is based on responses from the United States, a keen observation of the Nigerian landscape reveals that the current generation of digital natives who will become tomorrow’s donors and philanthropists are more likely to use technology-driven means of giving than more traditional methods. What this means for Nigerian nonprofits is that the trend indicates a gradual but definite growth in online giving.

The 2008 presidential campaign of President Obama was a watershed moment in bringing the power of community in fundraising to global notice. Prior to that, funding for campaigns was largely from a few powerful and wealthy individuals. The 2008 Obama campaign harnessed the power of communities of highly-engaged individuals to rally funds behind their preferred candidate. The campaign raised over $ 500 million and both his campaigns raised $41 billion through a combination of online and offline tactics.

As recognized by the SMW 2018 theme, while many technologies can increase feelings of isolation, there is a growing number, which are focused on fostering a sense of community. It is with these tools as well as crowdfunding platforms, that fundraisers seek to build the online portion of their giving campaigns. This session will be led by two social entrepreneurs with experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies and will cover:

• What online fundraising is and how it works
• Technology that can help to connect to donors by building community
• Best practices to build online engagement
• Review of successful online fundraising campaigns
• How to complement online engagement with offline community-building tactics
• Why it is important for fundraisers to connect with donors online

Cyber bullying continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing social media users.  Research from anti-bullying charity, Ditch the Label suggests that social media is making youngsters more anxious, with a lot of them depending on likes on their posts to build their self confidence and the number of followers linked to their self worth. Not only is social media redefining the climate of bullying, it is having clear impacts upon the identity, behavior and personality of its users. 

Instagram has been highlighted as having become the vehicle most used for harmful comments with less figures for Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat. This has led to Instagram developing a machine learning technology to block offensive comments, also giving people the option of disabling comments altogether or making their own list of banned words or emojis.

This panel will explore how social media and online reputation can impact individuals now and into the future as well as what we can do as a community to rise above cyber bullying.

Show Me The Money: Making Subscription Revenue Models Work For African Media

Media companies around the world have seen paid subscriptions surge - can this revenue model be replicated successfully in the African context? The theme of SMW Lagos 2017 is “Closer,” which is fitting, because one of the most interesting things happening in media today is the growth of paid memberships in media communities. 

Whether it’s the venerable New York Times, or new disruptors like The Information, more media companies are learning how to turn drive-by viewers - who consume content for free - into loyal audiences who make recurring payments in return for access. Not only do these companies secure predictable revenue every month, subscriptions deepen the relationship between publisher and community member.

Can this model work in our African context? Would African audiences pay a subscription for content? The answer is a resounding yes, and 5 companies at the forefront of experimenting with subscription payments will show us how.

Movies and all forms of visual storytelling, have always been more than just a tool for entertainment. Over the years, film has been used as a tool for social re-engineering, promoting themes which form the notions and opinions of viewers. Film often forms the first impressions people have for other societies and cultures and  when utilized skillfully, has proven to be a huge tool in social development.

The current state of our nation and society, is heartbreaking. There is a crisis of fitting the identities of the individual (ethnicities) within the constructs of the community (nation). Internally, there are so many lines that divide. This is evident oftentimes in the manner in which harmless conversations on social media rapidly degenerate into a hate filled back and forth, which often play along the prejudiced lines of tribe, religion and societal status. 

Nollywood has a huge role to play by emphasizing storytelling as a tool for nation building. Telling the right stories and promoting positive themes, can provoke necessary discussions among individuals, in homes, offices and streets. Passing the right information will go a long way in correcting wrongly held views and notions, while promoting a society that is more accommodating, and tolerant to the individual as well as the society as a whole.
